Indian Coffee House
Trotting Calcutta without paying a visit to Indian Coffee House is like walking in the premises of a temple without entering the sanctum sanctorum.
As you walk up the stairs the posters will tell you that the Indian Coffee House was not merely a cafe of a bygone era where people entered to munch on snacks and enjoy beverages but many revolutionary activities, ideas and strategies were conceived on those tables over tea and coffee.
As you enter or exit through the main big gate you will be able to almost hear the posters speaking to you, the slogans articulating concerns regarding the contemporary political condition of India.
Indian Coffee House draws people from all walks of life and caters to diverse age group with varied interest. From intellectual discussions to Bangali's adda the place is for all. From college goers, tourists (both Indian and international), academicians, romantic lovers to music lovers, coffee house literally buzzes with the cacophony of all.
Bibliophiles and book worms too find their love here. The book shop at the entrance definitely draws everyone's attention but the book shop on the first floor is another favourite spot for buyers who get a chance to scroll and browse through the books.
Sharing pictures of the famous Kolkata fish fry and chicken cutlet in black and white or grey and sepia tone would have been a heinous crime as they wouldn't have appealed to the taste buds of cutlet lovers who enjoy their long evening addas with fried snacks and tea or coffee.
The coffee of the Indian Coffee House however has never appealed to my taste bud and in this sense does injustice to the name. My suggestion is to not try the coffee and instead check out other food items available on the menu card for short meetings or endless addas.
P.S. The main attraction of this place is not the food or the coffee but the ambience, the vintage charm, and the cacophony of the crowd ~ MS.
